Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi helped to enable two of the sportsmen obtain better medical care and training in the United States before the Tokyo Olympics. Mr Singh is in Delhi to obtain good wishes from the top leadership, including the Prime Minister, as well as financial support for a variety of infrastructure-related projects in the state ahead of the assembly elections.

The Manipur Chief Minister told ANI that when he visited Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last week, he praised him for assisting Indian athlete Mirabai Chanu. He then described what Mirabai Chanu had said regarding the Prime Minister's Office's assistance to him at a public gathering intended to congratulate her.

"I was taken aback by her confession of the Prime Minister's assistance to her. She stated that she would not be able to attain this objective unless she was granted the opportunity to travel to the United States for her muscle surgery and practise. She described how Prime Minister Modi personally assisted her. The Prime Minister aided the athlete while also micromanaging the situation. The people of Manipur were ecstatic to learn of PM Modi's assistance to her "Mr Singh stated.

When the two met recently, Mr Singh expressed his gratitude to PM Modi.

"When we thanked PM Modi for his assistance to Chanu, he continued smiling. He also aided another athlete. This is the leader's glory "Mr Singh stated.

"Chanu was suffering back discomfort, and this message reached to the PMO, and PM Modi immediately intervened, and the PM covered all expenses for her treatment and training overseas," Mr Singh added.

"I'm informed she's not the only one who benefited from PM Modi's assistance. And the Prime Minister made no mention of it anywhere. I won't mention names, but PM Modi sent another athlete to the United States for medical treatment and training. We are very pleased to be Indians under Prime Minister Modi" Manipur's Chief Minister stated this.

Mirabai Chanu won silver in the Women's 49kg division at the current Tokyo Olympics, giving India its first medal.
